GRANDE MESS is the first chapter in a series of research and creative projects exploring the rites and mythologies of the Caribbean. Reinterpreting the Déboulé—the Guadeloupean carnival procession of the groupes à po (skin groups, named for their use of traditional drums made of animal skin)—the piece unfolds the idea of identity as bricolage: the figures we project ourselves into, those that represent us, those in which we recognize ourselves. Through the mask of the MAS (a group, a collective body, a shared identity), the intimate self is asserted with conviction.

Clémence Baubant leads us toward the hidden face of the Déboulé, Guadeloupe’s carnival, drawing from encounters with participants in this codified, danced march. In a renewed sonic landscape, three women revisit the intimate relationship between body, movement, and rhythm—where acoustic echoes of the procession emerge. On stage, this trio’s choreography links ancestral time with pop culture and mythological or historical figures such as Ladjablès or the Mûlatresse Solitude, immortalized by André Schwarz-Bart.”
