Under the title Sunken Works, Ghaliah is working on a series of pieces around the theme of human zoos, those so-called ‘exotic’ exhibitions that persisted in Europe until the end of the 20th century, where people of colour were displayed behind barriers, offered up for public viewing. What legacy does this history leave for black women today?
SUNKEN Works / Don’t BITE is a cinematic exploration of the gaze: the one we cast on others and the one we endure. How do we react to a gaze that traps us in a stereotype? And how do we reclaim our own image?
