Oh Lord
“There are not many artists in France who champion jazz dance. Géraldine Armstrong is one of the most committed, and also one of the best. She has two mentors: Matt Mattox, who has trained many disciples in France, and Alvin Ailey, a leading American figure. It is by remaining faithful to the teachings of these two artists that she has built her company’s repertoire. Each of her pieces has the same constant theme: giving primacy to movement and rhythm, exalting the body through blues, swing, and gospel with an alternative richness, a vibration, and a radiant sensuality. Her talented team of dancers has no trouble connecting with the audience.” / Jean-Claude Dienis
Born on the island of Grenada, Géraldine Armstrong studied dance in London with Johnny O’Brien and Molly Molloy and continued her studies in Paris with André Glegolski, Jacqueline Fynnaert, Matt Mattox, and Gianin Loringett. In 1998, she co-founded the Armstrong Jazz Ballet with Wayne Barbaste, which is now known as Black Source Dance Theater (Armstrong Jazz Ballet). Géraldine Armstrong has remained faithful to Alvin Ailey’s unique style, which combines classical dance and traditional black dance with a brilliant understanding of a wide variety of music and its relationship to specific movements.
