Ocean Moves - 96 Samoussas

Ocean Moves - Season 1, Episode 1 : 96 Samoussas

Marion Schrotzenberger wants to explore the ties that bind her maternal grandparents’ generation, a generation of Reunion Islanders who emigrated to mainland France, to their island of origin. Like many Reunionese families, hers moved to mainland France in search of better job opportunities and an “easier” life. And yet, their hearts still belong to Réunion. Her grandmother now lives in Montpellier in a building occupied solely by people from Réunion. This second family recreates the intense atmosphere that nourishes them—the building eats, breathes, and sleeps Réunion. Marion Schrotzenberger wants to tell the story of this population and its origins through the expression of dance.

For this video project, the dancer and choreographer has surrounded herself with members of her multidisciplinary collective Lookatmekid and Belgian director and producer Pierre-Louis Cassou – Tangente.

OCEAN MOVES – SEASON 1

[Duration: 45 min/Film/All ages]

Ocean Moves is a dance film series consisting of short episodes that showcase the intersection between choreography and cinema, highlighting the social and ecological issues facing the Indian Ocean, their beauty, and the imagination they inspire. Ocean Moves, the digital and audiovisual skin of the Indian Ocean’s choreographic biotope, connects us from a welcoming space for artists’ voices, where we can explore the idea of “Indian Ocean choreographic gestures.” The aim is to highlight their connection to places and objects of inspiration, to the environment: social, popular, natural, living… Outside the usual performance venues, the challenge is to reintegrate the personality of the places in which dance is rooted, the personality of this Indian Ocean environment, whether social or natural, intense or ordinary, and to raise awareness of a living memory, both for the dancers and for the local population. Perhaps, through the diversity of the episodes, we will discover a common Indian Ocean gesture, which spreads and is shared from one shore of the ocean to the other. The question remains open…
