Méditations represents my first choreographic encounter with John Coltrane, more specifically with his music. John Coltrane’s theme ‘Meditations’ exudes possession and presence. I worked with the dancers on the theme of ‘the call,’ that is, the force that literally passes through us, despite ourselves, and then connects us to something infinitely large and infinitely soothing. In developing the piece, I worked around ‘intuitive’ time (polyrythmic but structured arrhythmia) which gradually evolves into ‘logical’ time (structured polyrythmia) and which ultimately heralds another ‘intuitive’ time (polyrythmic and obsessive arrhythmia). The space itself is constantly experienced as an original space (cosmos). The performers are constantly connected to the ‘whole’ (infinite expanse, perhaps the origin of the origin?…). The dance alternates between choreography and improvisation. The performers developed their own dance based on a framework, then created a sort of bouquet that gradually evolves into a choral dance.”
