Making of Holly Roller

Year of production
2016

Documentary on the creation of the piece Psaumes #1 : Holly Roller, the first part of James Carlès’s “Psaumes” project.

ABOUT THE “PSAUMES” PROJECT

With “Psaumes,” I would like to explore and “capture” the multiple meanings of relationships as they play out in society today.
What is sacred? What is sacred today? Why is it sacred? How does the meaning of sacredness change based on personal or collective trajectories? What is my approach to sacredness? What is sacred to me? What do I desacralize? What are my sacrileges?
These are all questions that drive me.
At this stage in my personal and professional journey, I feel the desire to write contemporary psalms. It will not be sung poetic verse, but a poetic flow danced, about relationships (what “re”connects us).

ABOUT THE PIECE

For this first installment, Mark Tompkins questions the notions of the sacred and the religious. Against a backdrop of American gospel and popular songs, he creates a solo for an ambivalent character whose actions and states are constantly evolving.
