Les Biches
Les Biches is a one-act ballet by Bronislava Nijinska with music by Francis Poulenc and sets and costumes by Marie Laurencin.
Created by Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes on January 6, 1924, at the Théâtre de Monte-Carlo, the original cast included Bronislava Nijinska, Vera Nemtchinova, Alexandra Danilova, Lubov Tchernitcheva, Lydia Sokolova, Felia Doubrovska, Ninette de Valois, Léon Wojcikowski, Anton Dolin, Anatole Vilzak, and Nicolas Zverev. The ballet was revived on May 26 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
Since December 2, 1964, it has been performed fairly regularly at Covent Garden.
For the 70th anniversary of its creation, the ballet was revived by the Ballet de Lorraine under the direction of Pierre Lacotte.
Loosely inspired by Les Sylphides, this ballet is a Marivaux-style comedy of manners between young women of high society and three athletic young men.
The stage backdrop by Marie Laurencin is kept in Paris at the Musée de l’Orangerie (Walter-Guillaume collection).
