Event Merce Cunningham
Programming for the “Danses et Continents Noirs” Festival, directed by James Carlès
“Event Merce Cunningham” – Angers CNDC Company
In his statement of intent for the “Events,” Merce Cunningham wrote: “Presented without intermission, Event consists of complete dances or excerpts from dances in the repertoire, often with new sequences arranged for a particular performance and venue, with several separate activities taking place at the same time to create less of a dance evening and more of a dance experience.”
The first event, Museum Event No. 1, was presented in June 1964 at the 20 Jahrhunderts Museum in Vienna, Austria. By definition unique, more than 800 events have been presented around the world since that date. After Merce Cunningham’s death, Robert Swinston was entrusted with the responsibility of arranging the events that were presented until the dissolution of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in 2012. From 2013 onwards, he continued this work with the company of the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine in Angers, where he was artistic director until 2020.
