Duo

Year of creation

Year of production

Duo is presented in a confined space in front of the curtain, right at the edge of the stage. Two dancers create a kind of clock. They gradually inscribe time in a spiral shape, making it visible by working to integrate it into the space. They develop a specific and complex choreographic model that unfolds with the somersaults, scissors, strikes, and reversals they perform. Their two bodies shine in a shimmer of black, they fly with a form of continuous and reckless precision, and through their breath, they make the different layers of time visible.

The distant music comes and goes, appearing and disappearing like the dancers in a continuous whirl that reaches perfect calm. With this prodigious piece, William Forsythe creates a kind of clock inscribed in a continuous movement back to the origin.

Duo, which brings together Pauline Colemard and Marion Rastouil, showcases another of Forsythe’s obsessions: counterpoint.

Transforming their bodies into “counterpoint clocks,” the choreography shifts away from unison, revealing a choreographic system that seems to take fragments of time to weave new relationships between one movement and the next, between gesture and space. Creating a kind of tension in their bodies as they tumble and fall, or jump and fly, the two dancers become the very expression of a relentless machine that leaves no room for chance or hesitation.

Carried by Thom Willems’ music performed by pianist Gleb Machylev, the movements become harsh, caught up in a whirlwind that will bring them back to calm, in unison and then to a halt.”
